Successful GP-1 Grand Prix Event

December 11 2010, Mission Viejo, CA - Teams competed and grapplers were awarded during the first installment event at the Goes International GP-1 Grand Prix Submission Tournament. Joker’s MMA out of LA Boxing in Lake Forest had won two early matches to upset crown favorite Goes Martial Arts and advance to the Final Round of the Grand Prix GP-1 Tournament to be held in February 12th, 2011. Joker’s MMA, coached by UFC Fighter Mike “Joker” Guymon, first dismantled Goes Martial Arts winning two out of three matches in the preliminary round as only Mike Barreiro was able to get a win against John Cisneros. Joker’s MMA also won two early matches on the semi-final round versus Mercenary MMA, coached by Allan Goes’ Brown Belt student Nick Moghaddam. Joker’s MMA was represented by Walter Pinto, Elliott Amador and Jonny Cisneros.

Mercenary MMA out of LA Boxing in Aliso Viejo had upset the crowd favorite Subfighter MMA by winning two out of three matches. One of the matches was decided by submission as Mercenary MMA 199 pounder fighter Tyler “Giant” Garcia outweighed Subfighter’s representative Sean Maghami by about 50 pounds as Maghami wanted to take on the challenge. Mercenary MMA unfortunately took on two early losses to get eliminated at the semi-final round against Joker’s MMA. Mercenary’s lone win was Tyler Garcia’s second kimura submission win against Jonny Cisneros. Despite the loss, Mercenary MMA will have a chance for third place competing also in the Final Round in February 12th, 2011.

The event was attended by other professional fighters including The Jiu Jitsu Legend Allan Goes, Mike “Joker” Guymon, and local stars, Nick “Mercenary” Moghaddam, Luke Adams and Andy Morales. Adams and Morales, both Purple Belts in Jiu Jitsu, competed in an exhibition grappling match where Adams dominated Morales for most of the 6 minutes they grappled. Morales displayed amazing submission defense but tapped with 6 seconds remaining in the match. Special matches took place as Bernie Lora competed against Gio Vera, who won on a split decision. Lance Hassani finished Dan Sullivan via rear naked choke while Jason Youseph tapped out Eric Michaud via triagle choke.

John Wayne Cancer Foundation’s (and John Wayne’s son), Ethan Wayne, attended the event and enjoyed the display of high level competition – Ethan Wayne is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner himself. Wayne gave out prizes and talked about his foundation and his mission to fight cancer. The night was filled with submissions including triangle chokes, armbars, kimuras and multiple rear naked chokes.
